View full size ↗Turn on the historic survey layer
- 01
Frame the area.
Open the T52N · R30W example or navigate to your project. Keep enough of the township visible to understand its neighbors.
- 02
Enable Historic federal survey records.
Open Map layers and turn on the historic group. Survey township outlines and special surveys are the recommended starting categories.
- 03
Zoom to the requested detail.
Township outlines appear first. Special surveys, intersected divisions, and aliquots or government lots require closer views. Each category reports when to zoom in.
- 04
Select an outline.
Click its boundary or interior to open the research panel. Confirm the township and meridian shown before reading the returned documents.

For a supported Missouri township, the panel queries four state index categories: GLO plats, GLO field notes, AR GLO field notes and GLO private claims. The category counts describe the response to that township lookup.
Use the filter to narrow by document name, surveyor or book/page reference. A card preserves its date, surveyor, book/page and available section or section-line references. An entry is not necessarily a complete survey, and similar document names can appear on different pages.
| Item | How to use it |
|---|---|
| Document name | Match the entry in the official repository |
| Book / page | Retain the reference for note retrieval |
| Section references | Check the portions indexed to the entry |
| Section-line codes | Interpret using Missouri’s official index guide |

A View official plat preview action appears only when the state index supplies a public preview link. Field-note entries may have a usable index reference without an image preview. Keep the book/page and document name, then open Missouri GLO index to search that township and record type.
Search this township in BLM GLO opens the federal portal with the township research reference. It is an alternate source-search path; coverage and the document grouping can differ from Missouri’s index. Compare the actual plat or notes before assuming the records match.
Understand what the highlighted outline means
These are modern cadastral reference polygons. They are not historic plat images stretched onto the map, and they do not demonstrate that every listed document covers the selected polygon.
If a category reports unavailable or partial, retry the lookup or continue at the official index. An empty category is a different result from a failed query. The historic layer excludes mining-survey research and should not be used as a current mineral-claim inventory.
